So this upcoming weekend I am doing makeup for a BACHELORETTE PARTY!! I am so excited to meet the ladies! I am getting prepared for up to 4 ladies ready to HIT the town. So I am thinking that we are going to be playing with SMOKEY eyes, Bronzing powers, Strip lashes and over all more dramatic looks.

In preparation, as if I do NOT have enough makeup, I hit the target isle just to get some more waterproof mascara. i do not have a favorite coveted brand at this point, any mascara will do. My favorite place to go in Target are the back of the iles. This is where ALL of the clearance sections are. Upon arriving to the makeup portion of the clearance section I discovered something. My personal favorite foundation has been discontinued! I have tried LOTS of foundations for my own face, but since I am pretty cheap and still like to look great on a daily basis, I found a foundation that did the job.  The most amazing thing is though, that this is a foundation that I have used on every girl that I have done makeup for lately since it looks AMAZING on everyone! It is sheer, light weight, yet holds up. I have several other foundations for stage, photography, and more, but this little engine that could, holds up under all of those circumstances as well.
SO, now that I am passing this on to my clients faces as well for Weddings especially due to the light weight and texture less feel, I am ON A MISSION to get to every target in the city to find my special foundation!!
oh in addition, I scored, a $2.50 waterproof mascera, and a very nice, high end lip gloss for 2.50. GOT to get to the Clearance sections!
his past weekend was so much fun! I had a consult AND a WEDDING! I was excited about my consult that was first! As I arrived I found a beautiful young lady ready to try on colors for her wedding. During a consult, you may be wondering what do you do? Well, thats fun and easy. things I like to find out on a consult:

  • do you wear makeup daily?
  •  if so-what kind of coverage does it give you?
  • Do you wear lipstick and if so, what color?
  •  What colors do you normally wear?
  •  What colors are you thinking about for your wedding or event?
  •  is your wedding inside or outside?
  •  is your wedding during the day or at night?
  •  Do you have any makeup allergies?
  •  Are you wearing a head piece?
  •  Thoughts on wedding style hair?
  •  Will you be tan?

Once we get through our Q and A i pick a few colors along with your input and we start to try on. Sometimes if we cant decide, I do one side of your face in one color and one in the other. I do false eyelashes on you so you can see and feel what they look like. We take photos so that we can make changes to things we don't like. The wedding consult is fun, and also a time to try different ideas and think about changes. A consult is important for your upcoming wedding and is very affordable! Contact me about we can chat about it!

I cant wait to show you photos of my wedding makeover, but those are coming from the official photographer so just hang tight!
I have been organizing and packing lots of GREAT stuff for my appointments this weekend! I have one bridal consultation and one wedding! I am over the moon excited about both! It it is so funny to me that every time the FULL moon comes around, I don't even need a calendar to tell me that its here. Things just start spilling, breaking, and dropping! I know that its the FULL MOON at work in my life! I am happy to report that my FULL MOON mania happened yesterday, so I feel like I can move forward today!

I happily ran to Barnes & Noble today to pick up two magazines for this weekends up coming Bridal consultation, and Wedding! I want ALL the knowledge I can get on a few different hair styles that I am tossing around in my head for my Brides! I just love looking through the Brides magazine and enjoy the life, serenity and beauty that it brings!

A few hair style Dos and Don'ts:

  • DO try out hot rollers, different styles and even highlights at least 4-6 weeks before your wedding.
  • Do try on your veil with the hairstyle you think you would like to wear
  • Do stick to a simple hairstyle. A complicated hairdo might be hard to maintain especially if you don’t have a hairstylist to help you during the day.
  • DON'T use hair extensions that are a lot different than your own daily style.
  • DO try hair buns and pony tails that accentuate your hair style and look natural. You don't want to be a completely different person when you show up to smooch your new beau!

DO Plan to be an enhanced and exceptionally beautiful version of yourself on your big day!

I am MORE than thrilled to get this week started! FIRST, I am excited to report that the inquires are really pouring in!! I am SO thankful and feel so wonderful that YOU are finding ME! I have several bookings in the works and I have a beautiful Bride I am going to be doing hair/makeup for at the end of this week! I can hardly wait to get there and my fingers are iching to get started on a beautiful look!
Today, my mother came over and we had a little fun trying on some of the new Artistry products I had just gotten in for my Bride at the end of the week and a few other bookings. One of them is a balancing foundation. I actually love this foundation!! I KNOW that I love it when I check my face at lunch time(while at work), it still looks as if I had just put it on! LOVE IT! So she is ordering some of that, but I am excited to use this particular foundation this coming week on my Bride! She will look amazing!!!!!!

here is a bit about the balancing foundation I was talking about!

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect from a foundation?
A well-applied foundation should make your skin look healthy and flawless. It can help to cover imperfections, making your skin look smooth, but natural.

How do I choose a foundation?
A foundation should match your skin tone as closely as possible, and – just as important – it should complement your skin’s undertone. Test which shade looks best by applying a small amount on your jaw bone. Not a perfect match? ARTISTRY® foundations are covered by a 180-day money-back Satisfaction Guarantee.

What steps should I take to determine the right foundation for my skin tone?
  1. Know your skin type (oily, combination, normal, dry). ARTISTRY foundations and powders provide ongoing skin care benefits, so it’s important to take your individual skin type into account. If you don’t know yours, see the question below about how to determine your skin type.
  2. Determine your undertone. It is generally best to chose a foundation with the same undertones as your skin. For instance, if you have yellow undertones, select a foundation with yellow undertones as well for the most natural look. If you don’t know yours, see the question below about determining skin’s undertones.
  3. Determine the intensity of your skin (fair, medium, dark). Intensity is how light or dark your skin is.
  4. Choose a foundation based on the finish and coverage your skin requires. More mature skin with discolourations or skin prone to blemishes and uneven tone would benefit from medium coverage. For skin that is more naturally even, sheer may be enough coverage. For the most natural look, select the lowest amount of coverage your skin requires.

How do I determine my skin type?
Choose the description below that best defines your skin.
  • Oily skin tends to be shiny in the T-zone (across the forehead and down the nose) and on the chin. Oily skin is prone to breakouts and blackheads and may have larger pores. On a positive note, oily skin typically has more elasticity and moisture making it less prone to wrinkles.
  • Combination skin is oily in the T-zone and dry on the cheeks. It may be prone to breakouts around the hairline and perimeter of the face. Oily and dry sections should be treated separately with appropriate products.
  • Normal skin has a smooth texture, few breakouts, and even tone.
  • Dry skin tends to have flaky patches and feels rough to the touch. Dry skin sometimes feels tight and itchy after cleansing. It is less prone to breakouts and has smaller pores. A benefit is that once moisture is put back into dry skin, it looks beautiful, with a very even texture.
  • Sensitive skin is often red and blotchy and is easily irritated. It is more sensitive to products, and capillaries toward the surface of the skin are more visible. Sensitive skin should be protected from sun exposure and should never be scrubbed harshly.

What does a balancing foundation do?
A key feature of ARTISTRY Balancing Foundation is that it controls shine. A perfect choice for oily or combination skin, it will deliver moisture to dry areas while wicking away oil where it isn’t needed.

How do I determine my skin’s undertone?
To find your ideal shade match, you must understand your skin undertone. The undertone is your truest, most natural skin colour. To determine your natural skin undertone, the best place to look is on the inside of your forearm. Most people fall into one of three undertone categories: pink, yellow, or neutral. Assess the undertones on the skin of your forearm in both natural and artificial light for the truest reading. If you notice a yellow or olive cast, you have yellow undertones. If your skin has a pink or blue tint, you have pink undertones. And if your skin has a balance of both, or a beige undertone, you have neutral undertones.

It is generally best to choose a foundation with the same undertones as your skin. However, there are exceptions to this rule. If you have pink undertones, but your facial skin is red and blotchy from too much sun exposure or broken capillaries, it is best to avoid pink-hued foundations because they will emphasize the redness in your skin. In this case, choose a yellow or neutral-based foundation to neutralize the redness.

I am so pale. Should I wear a darker shade foundation to add colour to my skin?
No, a darker foundation will look unnatural. Instead, use a foundation shade that has a subtle yellow undertone. This will warm your skin without looking too obvious or too dark.

My skin tone is medium. What shade should I use?
It is important not to choose a shade that is too light, which can make you look washed out, nor too dark, which will look unnatural. Try to match the shade as close to your skin as possible. Choosing a shade with a yellow undertone is a safe way to ensure your skin will look the most natural and give your complexion a little warmth.

I have an olive complexion. What shade of foundation should I wear?
Stay away from pink or orange-based foundations that will give you a mask-like appearance. Instead, use a yellow-based foundation for a natural look that will add warmth to your skin.

I have a dark complexion. What shade of foundation should I wear?
Red or yellow-based foundations, in the copper and soft gold shade range, are typically a good match for dark complexions.

I look really washed out when I use foundation. What can I do?
First, make sure the shade you’re using isn’t too light for your skin tone. You should also avoid pink-based foundations that can make your skin look pale and washed out. Instead, try a foundation with a yellow base for a warm glow.

How does the weather impact the foundation I should use?
Depending on where you live, spring and summer often bring more humidity, so a lighter formulated foundation would be best. In fall and winter, there is often less humidity and drier air. A moisturizing formula may be best during these months to restore lost moisture. If you live in a region with high humidity, try an oil-free, sheer, or powder foundation. And, if your skin gets darker or lighter with the seasons, be sure you adjust the foundation shade you’re using as well.

Should the age of my skin impact my foundation choice?
Using the correct foundation can reduce the visible signs of aging. Choose a foundation that not only conceals, but also helps prevent future signs of aging. Skin tends to become drier, so moisturizing properties are also important.

What is the difference between SPF and PA?
SPF is, literally, the Sun Protection Factor. An SPF 15 means that the product will provide 15 times your skin’s natural protection from the sun’s USB rays. The PA, Protection Factor A, rating applies to UVA ray protection and includes a + sign to denote the amount of protection. One (+) is low, three (+++) is high. A truly effective sunscreen should include UVA and UVB protection to protect the skin.
I love it when something unexpected comes your way! After our little evening girl fun time at the beach, a little birdy got a hold of my sister in laws photos and low and behold, she is now famous! LOL!

I have alot of lip stick tubes.  I am fortunate that my mother in law and my mother both give me lip sticks that come in the sample packs at Christmas, and holiday packs, and so forth. Sometimes I like 'em and sometimes i just cant tell if i like them in the tubes. But I have discovered the best way to use them and let my clients enjoy them as well! I had the idea to take all of my tube lip sticks that I carry around with me, and put them into a palette. What a GREAT idea-right?. I was on a shoot with a lady a few weeks ago, and I was searching through my lip tubes, and could not find the right one. I tried a couple on her before I found what I was looking for, not to mention the time going through the tubes. Now, yes, I can easily buy a lip palette with pre-selected colors from a store, but I have all these beautiful tubes of lipstick from Clinique, MAC, Artistry, Estee Lauder, so why not use them? With my new lip palette creation, I can see the rich lip colors, that I was not able to really see before in the tube form. I can easily mix them in the middle of the palette and wipe off later. I absolutely love this! Some of these colors are so pretty and rich that I cant believe I overlooked some of these before!
I bought the palette at Micheal's, in the art section. It is waterproof and airtight. with 18 slots!
its a perfect idea if you have all those tubes you want to consolidate!  Just use a lip brush to put them on.
I am so very excited about this new found wonder! The case is slim and easy to pack.
Ok, who's face is next I am ready to put on some lips!
Ah memories! My friends and I used to get together as kids and do facials and makeovers, and then we would make music videos using our families 1 extra large video camera..remember those? We would laugh and giggle until midnight just having fun and making memories that I still cherish. Well, who says you still can't go back to those times as an adult and mom?

Our second night on Hilton Head Island this week in our beautiful rental house, along with 5 kids and my sister and brother in law, on a pouring rainy evening, my sister in law, Janice and I found the magic of our youth at 11pm at night! Just after 9pm, we started on her makeover as the rain and thunder poured down over head and the kids settled (kinda) into watching TV and playing video games, while the men talked golf and the food (and wine) settled.
We started with a before shot of course....and then i unleashed the skills....LOL!

Around 11pm, we decided after many kicks and giggles in the large master bathroom upstairs (where the lighting is the best) taking after photos, that I would proceed with a hair makeover!

Janice has never tried the loose curls and I kept assuring her that she would fall in love with them fast!

I took a few shots so you could view the scene.... thrown on shirt (tag still on) curling irons everywhere, sitting on the bathroom counter.... of course we laugh hysterically every few minutes, at the silliness we have created.

Well, fast she did fall in love with those curls! It was not long before it was midnight and we were clawing through the master closet, found a cool grey shirt, ran down to my jewelry box and plucked out a necklace of pearls and silver. You might be wondering what the men are doing at this point, well, of course they think we had lost our minds, but no matter, the fun continued!

The best part is that these were actually taken in the master bath SHOWER! Ain't she purdy??
I think she looks fabulous! So at 1:30 am, my head hit the pillow, thunder in the distance and a beauty mission accomplished!

hugs,

joy
I have been acting and modeling for a very long time. There is a big difference in the type of makeup for photographs that you need for each. With acting headshots, as I did today, the person has to look pretty much the way they look in real life. As a makeup artist, I need to scale back a bit on lots of intensity and go with a nice overall flow. A very real look is what we are going for. I chose to go with earthy tones, and of course almost no sheen shining in my makeup.
I had the best time today working with my old friend Eric Dobbs. He lives in Downtown Richmond and I just love to go to that part of town. I never lived "in the city" as a child and i am always awe struck. As I was waiting for the clock to strike 2pm, i drove around the block and low and behold I found a STARBUCKS lurking out of the side of a street like the movies! I LOVE IT! I parked my car on the street, like I knew what i was doing, and walked up to the corner Starbucks pulled open the old wood door, that I imagine has seen so much come and go in its day, and enjoyed the very college and downtown feel of this coffee shop!
After fueling up and returning to Erics place I met with the beautiful actress ready to be made over. I am very excited for you to see her before and after photos!
So I wanted to have a booth at the Richmond Bridal show, but I just did not get geared up quick enough to make it into the show. But I will be there in January!
I invited my mother to go after we got  free tickets from Meghan of OFD Consulting- Connecting Wedding Professionals with their Brides http://www.ofdconsulting.com... do you know she was featured in the Times-Dispatch on Sunday!!  She is so nice!
Well,  If you have not been to a Bridal show in a while, boy are they FUN! We had the very best time going through and talking to the vendors, course they all thought I was getting married! We ate lots of great appetizers made by local businesses (places to have your reception) and found chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate dipped cookies. Brides were everywhere wearing heart shaped bride buttons that said "Bride to Be!" I later talked my mother into wearing the heart shaped button home and sport it in front of my Dad.....funny right? Could there be a better heavenly Sunday??  The vendors were so nice and I am really looking forward to being a vendor in January!! Happy Week!! Looking forward to doing a makeover for a lucky lady this week! Yea!

hugs,
